U-Rah-Rah, Wisconsin! Could you hear everyone singing the song while you read this? Can you imagine a huge stadium full of red? If you could, congratulations, you are officially a Badger! And better than that, you are already experiencing the UW life! It is amazing that everyone is already living this new life and learning every day. We worked so hard to be here, and now it is time to enjoy the rewards and everything UW offers.
Many of us were not used to making decisions, and, if we needed to, we would run to our parents and ask for advice. However, everything is completely different now. In fact, our parents may barely know what is going on here. So, now, it is up to us to make decisions everyday. Since classes started, schedules are hectic. Have you had two or more things to do on the same day, at the same time? There are many things happening at the same time, and sometimes, it is almost impossible to decide where to go and what to do.
During my first weeks, I wanted to do everything and it made me feel totally overwhelmed. I could not find time in my schedule to do all I wanted, and it was making me really upset. Then, I went to meet my advisor, and it was the best thing I could have done. I want to major in chemical engineering, with a certificate in business. When I got here, I thought I was going to start both of them at the same time and everything was going to be fine. When I talked to the advisor, however, she told me that it is better to wait. She suggested I use my first semester to get used to college life before starting business classes. I could not be more thankful for her advice. Once the classes, assignments, and homework started, I decided to get involved with two organizations. This made my schedule even more full. Not to mention that I also have to study! My advisor’s advice was the best I could ever receive. The best person to help us with class enrollment, major decisions, and also advices about student life is your advisor. If you haven’t talked to your advisor yet, send them an email, talk to them, and experience this amazing service that UW offers. You won’t regret it!
Besides that, everyone is going through midterms (or will be soon). This time can be really stressful. I’m going through my first midterms too, and I think it is essential to learn how to study best for each course. Each course may require its own kind of studying technique. Also, the most important thing to know is that our professors and friends are there to help! Whether it be with study groups or office hours, we have many resources to enjoy on campus.
Finally, the fall season is here. As the leaves mature, I believe that it is a metaphor for what is going on with all of us now: we are growing up, changing, and getting mature! I hope you enjoy this beautiful season, and I hope everyone enjoys all those services UW offers to help us grow. On Wisconsin!
